Ottawa Newborn Photos | Calm & Awake. As a photographer specializing in newborn sessions, I often encounter a common misconception. That the best shots are only possible when baby is asleep. While those sleepy poses absolutely have their charm, there’s something magical about capturing moments when baby is wide awake.
One of the first things parents learn about their newborn is that sleep patterns are incredibly unpredictable. What worked yesterday might not work today, and every day brings new adventures in sleep (or lack thereof!). In my studio I create a calm and cozy environment to ensure baby’s comfort and to encourage sleep. But the reality is, sometimes babies just want to be awake, curious about the world around them.
And you know what? Those awake moments are beautiful too! It’s incredibly special to capture a newborn’s bright eyes with their curious looks. We’re able to get a glimpse of their personality and how they’re connecting with their world. Whether they’re peacefully gazing at the camera or wide-eyed with curiosity, every expression is something I love to capture for new parents.
When we embrace capturing awake moments during a session, we open the door to a wider variety of photos. I can capture the serene moments of sleep but also the lively interactions of baby awake. It adds variety to the final gallery, showing off the full range of baby’s personality during those early days after birth.
In these first few days and weeks after birth, it’s also really important that we don’t take up a half a day at a session waiting for baby to sleep. I understand that parents have busy schedules. With older siblings to attend to, rest to catch up on, and medical appointments to manage. That’s why I make each session as smooth as possible, ensuring we capture beautiful photos of baby whether they’re awake or asleep.
While newborn sleep cycles may be unpredictable, the beauty of awake moments is also undeniable. When we celebrate every aspect of the newborn experience, from sleepy snuggles to wide-eyed wonder each memory can be treasured for years to come.
