Newborn Photography Ottawa | Session Timing. When should you book your newborn photography session? If you’ve just welcomed a baby (congratulations!), or you’re eagerly awaiting their arrival, you might be wondering when is the best time to schedule those first professional photos. The sweet spot? Typically between 1 to 3 weeks after birth. Here’s why:
1. They’re extra sleepy and still love to curl-up.
In those early days, babies are usually sleepy and snuggled up—just like they were in the womb. This makes it easier to gently pose them in those adorable curled-up positions. Think tiny toes tucked under, little hands resting on cheeks, and peaceful sleepy expressions. Once they hit the 3-4 week mark, they tend to stretch out more and might not enjoy being posed in the same way. (They also start to notice the world and become less interested in napping through their photo session.)
2. They change so fast.
You might be surprised how different your baby looks just a few weeks after birth. Newborn photography is all about capturing that fresh, tiny, brand-new stage that passes in the blink of an eye. Whether it’s the peach fuzz, the way they scrunch their nose, or that sleepy milk-drunk smile—it’s all worth preserving in photos before it changes.
3. Two-parent families?
If there are two parents in the household, early sessions are a great way to take advantage of parental leave. Scheduling during those first few weeks often means both parents are still off work and available—making it easier to coordinate the session.
Newborn sessions are about more than just pretty pictures. They’re about freezing time, just a little, while everything around you changes so quickly.
