Newborn Photography Ottawa | What if my child is shy?. How to Make Photo Sessions with Toddlers Stress-Free and Fun
If you’ve ever worried that your toddler will be too shy, hesitant, or unsure during a photo session, you’re not alone! Many parents share this concern, and after photographing over 4,000 families, I can confidently say—there’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to little ones.
Toddlers and preschoolers are full of personality, but they’re also unpredictable. That’s why I take a flexible, experience-based approach to every session. Over the years, I’ve learned how to quickly assess each child’s comfort level and adjust my strategy to make the experience enjoyable for everyone. Here’s how I make sure your child feels at ease:
- Preparation is Key – Before your session, I send parents simple, helpful guidelines on how to prepare their child. Knowing what to expect makes a big difference in helping kids (and parents!) feel more relaxed.
- Easing into the Session – When I meet your little one, I don’t immediately overwhelm them with attention. Instead, I chat with you—the parents—so your child can observe and warm up at their own pace. I also give them plenty of space, avoiding quick movements or too many questions right away.
- Play-Based Photography – Instead of giving strict instructions like “sit here” or “look at the camera,” I use songs, games, and toys to make the session feel like playtime. This approach keeps kids engaged and brings out their natural smiles and expressions.
Every child is different, but with experience comes the ability to adapt in the moment. My goal is always to create a fun, relaxed atmosphere so your toddler’s personality shines through—no forced smiles required.
