Clients often ask me what the perfect age for newborn photos is.

“How old should my baby be for their newborn session?”

There is no perfect age for newborn photos but there is a window for newborn photo sessions.

Newborn photos typically take place between 7 and 21 days. However, newborn sessions can take place up to 8 weeks of age.

When babies are older than 3-4 weeks old, their sessions are different in some ways:

-they don’t typically curl into as many of the poses as they’ve been out of the womb for several weeks and prefer to be in poses that allow them to stretch out.

-they may be awake for more of their session as their “aware” periods during the day are longer.

-older babies may need to be swaddled or have their body covered if they don’t like the sensation of being naked.

-they may not fit into all of the props or be able to wear all of the accessories. This is the same as for babies who are 4-6 pounds at birth. Some of the props and accessories may be too big for them.

We encourage families to contact us at the end of their second trimester to book their newborn session. We do our best to accommodate last minute requests (e.g., after a baby is born) for sessions but we often have to turn down clients as our schedule fills up several weeks in advance.
