Clients often ask “what if we don’t like looking at the camera?” but it’s ok to be camera shy!
You don’t have to look at the camera! There is no requirement to look at the camera and smile for sessions. Before your session we will make sure we understand whether you want your focus to be on more candid and unposed images, posed photos, or both!
Candid photos are photos that are taken of people in action. That can include photos of physical activity like running or jumping. But they also include photos of families cuddling, smiling at each other, or enjoying a quiet moment together. It’s okay to be camera shy and not want to look at the camera, you will still have beautiful family photos!
As an Ottawa newborn photographer I am often asked by my clients if there is a way to have candid newborn photos. Candid and unposed photos are not only possible at a newborn session, they also result in incredibly meaningful and treasured memories. When a parent looks at their newborn baby, the love they have for them lights up their entire face. Capturing that new and powerful love candidly on camera is a beautiful memento parents treasure long after baby grows up.
No really, it’s ok to be camera shy!
It’s not only okay to be camera shy and not want to look at the camera during a session. It’s also okay if you’re entirely unsure about what kinds of moments you’d like captured. A (not) very well kept secret is that candid and unposed photos are actually kind of, well… “posed”. What I mean by that is that I am guiding the interactions family members are having with each other when I photograph candid moments.
Guidance such as “Turn to the left and lean into your baby” or “place your hand on baby’s arm as your partner holds them” helps ensure I’m able to not only capture a sweet memory but also that photos are aesthetically beautiful. For some candid photos I step back a bit more and photograph the moment as it unfolds. But for those that are camera shy, please know that it’s okay! Whatever your desire is for posed or candid photos know that you will have beautiful memories to treasure forever and share with your family and friends.
