First birthday photos against the backdrop of a boho rainbow was the sweetest setting for her special day! After having her newborn photos at the studio one year ago Baby S was back again for a session to celebrate turning one.
First Birthday Sessions are all about celebrating baby’s changing personality, physical milestones, and creating lifelong memories. They are one of my favourite types of sessions. What could be more fun than a first birthday session?!? Because every baby is so different, no session is ever the same as another.
For this cutie’s first birthday photos, her parents chose to include a cake smash and a boho rainbow backdrop. A cake smash is a popular first birthday session activity. The cake is a classic birthday tradition and serves as a fun way to include candid, action photos. We never know just how baby will react to their cake which also makes it a great way to capture baby’s personality on camera. Will baby dive right into their cake with an icing splash? Or will a little one curiously and hesitantly poke at their beautifully decorated cake? Capturing their exploration of their cake is an amazing way to capture babies’ changing personalities and how they experience the world around them.
Before bringing out out Miss S’s gorgeous cake, we started with first birthday photos in her pretty pink dress against my boho rainbow backdrop. She loved my wooden rainbow toy prop, it was such a fun addition to her birthday portraits.

Mom changed Miss S into a lacy white first birthday romper while we set up the cake smash photos in front of the boho rainbow backdrop. When mom placed her in front of her cake she was very curious about it and our plans. While she seemed unsure at first, some encouragement and explanation from mom had her cautiously taste testing her cake. With an occasional purse of her lips, she seemed to have mixed feelings between loving the taste of the icing but not the mess on her fingers. It was so interesting to watch as she tasted her cake! Miss S is such a curious and observational little one and I love that her first birthday photos capture that about her personality.
