Maternity photography sessions in the studio offer a wide range of backdrops, lighting, and wardrobe possibilities for expectant parents. When I opened my new studio I was very excited about all the maternity sessions I’d be able to offer. The creative possibilities in the studio for maternity photography sessions are practically endless!

I styled the session for these excited first time parents-to-be with three very different looks. Mom loved my teal gown and it suited her perfectly. I matched the teal gown against my full length blue backdrop. The teal and blue together continues to be one of my favourite colour combinations. The colours were beautiful on this gorgeous mama-to-be. The length of the backdrop meant I was able to pull back and capture her entire profile and her perfect baby belly.

After including dad for portraits of the couple together we moved to my bright white dream lighting. One of my favourite things about maternity photography in the studio is being able to use dream lighting. I love to use dream lighting for all types of sessions including newborn, graduation, headshots and family sessions. The way the light accentuates an expectant parents’ baby belly makes it especially amazing for maternity sessions.

Not only is dream lighting ideal for showing off an expectant parent’s profile it’s also gorgeous for couples’ photos. The intimacy and connection of this happy couple radiates in their photos together. I am so thrilled for them to be welcoming their baby soon, they are already so in love with them!

Using fabrics for maternity photography in the studio

Before finishing up the maternity photography session in the studio we moved to my black full length backdrop. Mom had selected from my collection a silky grey fabric to use for her photos. The grey fabric is perfect for creating really dramatic and eye catching maternity portraits. With a little help from dad’s fabric tossing hands and a high powered fan we made magic. The photo of the fabric swirling around mom as she cradles her baby belly is absolutely stunning and a favourite of mine.

It was a joy to help this lovely couple capture their excitement and their love for their little one at their maternity photography session in the studio. I can’t wait to see them soon at their newborn session.
