One of my favourite times of year to photograph maternity sessions is in the late Fall and early Winter. The Spring and Fall are often celebrated for their bright colours but I also love how the muted colours of the fallen leaves and the dappling of snow creates a soft backdrop, perfect for helping to create serene and beautiful maternity photos.

For this gorgeous mama’s session we met up near a local lake. For women who would like their maternity photos by the water at this time of year I prefer the sheltered settings offered around lakes to our rivers. With the lake surface still mostly free from ice we had a few curious ducks who must have been wondering what we were doing on their lake’s edge but they were clearly the friendly type as they stayed nearby as I photographed mom.

It was a bit chilly that day so we kept moving to stay warm and to take best advantage of all of the different backdrops around the lake. The flowy blue dress this mama-to-be brought with her was a gorgeous colour on her and with it’s deep colour was a nice contrast against the muted tones at the location.

For the second part of our session together, mom changed into one of my favourite white gowns for Winter sessions. As much as I love vivid pops of colour against the light backdrops to highlight the beauty of mom I also love the soft look of more monochromatic colours together. To include a bit of both looks at her session was wonderful in adding variety to her photos, she looked gorgeous in both dresses and I am absolutely thrilled with the results.
