Recently I had the chance to interview several of my clients about why photography sessions have become such an important part of their families traditions. One of my questions focused on my clients advice to families who are reluctant to book a photography session. There always seems to be at least 20 reasons not to book a session and I was curious to know how my clients overcame their own reservations to book regular sessions for their own families.
One piece of advice in particular stuck with me: “we do it for our kids”
A lot of people don’t like having their photo taken. They are concerned about their appearance. They don’t like their hair or how their clothes fit. They don’t like being the centre of attention. They’re busy and booking a session is just one more thing on a never ending list of things to do.
As a mom of three, I hear you.
What I loved about this mom’s comment was that even though we sometimes don’t want to invest the time or money in something we are anxious or stressed about, we can often overcome those reservations when we realize how important it is to our kids. You see wrinkles and bags under your eyes and exhaustion but your kids see the person who loves them unconditionally, who is there to take care of bumped knees, find lost toys, and who reads their favourite stories. As much as Mother’s Day Photography Sessions are about moms they’re ultimately about our relationships with our kids and taking time to celebrate that bond.
To all the wonderful moms out there, it’s time:
1-To finally get yourself in your photos and family albums!
So often it’s mom who is behind the camera, ever dedicated to recording all of the important moments of your family’s life. I think that dedication is wonderful but unfortunately that means there are not very many photos of you with your children. And most of what you do have are probably selfies or quick snapshots by someone not too handy with a camera. It is important to have beautiful photographs of you with your children; happy and enjoying each other’s company in a way that you will want to remember forever. A Mother’s Day Session is the perfect opportunity to fill in those gaps in your family’s albums and have photos for your children with you by their side.
2-To remember your children as they are now.
Those little fingers, gapped tooth smiles, and wispy curls are fleeting. A photo session with your children take you back in time every time you look at it and those photos will always remind you of how they once were. A Mother’s Day Session will allow you to hang on to those precious moments from your children’s younger years forever, long after they have grown up.
3-To let someone else take care of all the details.
I am so excited for Mother’s Day Sessions on my brand new Spring Studio set. The soft and neutral colours and antique wood props are a gorgeous backdrop for portraits of mothers and grandmothers with their children. I’ve also created a special Pinterest board and detailed welcome package for my clients so they don’t have to figure out what will look best in the photos: I’m here to take care of all the details so you don’t have to!
4-To look and feel beautiful. More importantly: to feel loved.
I understand that not everyone likes getting in front of the camera and that you may feel a bit vulnerable or self-conscious. When you book your Mother’s Day Session I want you to know that I will make you look your best. I will provide you with information about how to prepare and what to wear ahead of time and then during your session I will pose you in ways that flatter you and make you feel beautiful. These photographs are important to you and your children and I will ensure you have memories and photographs that you will be proud and happy to share and display.
5-To enjoy a stress-free session experience
This Mother’s Day I will take the work out of your session and make it the easiest and most enjoyable experience possible for you and your children. From the moment you book your session all of the details will be taken care of. I will help you with your session preparation and wardrobe selection and I will style and plan for your session based on your own family’s preferences and needs. At your session it will be a fun and easy experience as I walk you (or dance or sing, depending on what your child likes) through a variety of poses. Once your session is over I will take care of everything for you and make choosing and receiving your images and prints as quick and as convenient as possible. As a busy mother myself I know that it is important that your session results in beautiful photographs but also how important it is to you that it is fun and easy.
6-To celebrate the good times!
Motherhood is hard. It’s messy. And it’s not always sunshine and roses. When the tough moments hit and you feel like you’re not doing the greatest job or that it is not everything you expected it to be it is so uplifting to have beautiful, happy photographs of you with your children on your walls. Looking at these beautiful photos reminds you of the wonderful moments that always exist in between the less than pretty times.
7-To have a beautiful reminder of this stage of your life.
Motherhood is one of the most defining identities of your life and it deserves to be honoured with photographs you can proudly share and display. Many women invest a lot of time and money into their wedding photography but then unfortunately neglect to book sessions with their children. A lot of women later regret not having beautiful photographs from this important stage of their lives. Your children are never too young (or old) for photography sessions. Now is the time to photograph your relationship with your children as your role of mother is forever changing. Make this the year you start a tradition of getting in photos with your children.
8-To enjoy time with your kids.
We spend so much of our time as mothers worrying about whether our kids are happy. Not only do I want you to have beautiful photographs to treasure for years to come but I want both you and your kids to have a memorable experience in front of my camera. I enjoy working with babies and children of all ages and temperaments and love being able to connect with all of my clients. No matter how your child is feeling on the day of your session we will have fun together and make beautiful memories for all of you to enjoy for a lifetime.
9-To have beautiful photos to decorate your walls.
Nothing is more beautiful or meaningful than photos of your own family on the walls of your home. Included in every session is a selection of prints and I also have tips for how and where to display images in your home. If you’re not sure where to hang your photos, how big your prints should be, or how to group different images together, I’m here to help!
10-To give your kids, and yourself, the gift of memories.
Mother’s Day Sessions are the perfect gift for children and spouses to give to the mothers in their lives. Give the gift they may struggle to give themselves and the special mother in your life will treasure their photographs and memories forever.
