One of the top ten most frequent questions I’m asked when people find out that I’m a photographer is ‘Nikon or Canon?’.  This is usually followed by curiosity about the lenses I use and what gear is in my bag.  After a long winter I’m getting ready for Spring Sessions and thought I was long overdue for a behind the scenes ‘what’s in my bag’ post about the lenses and equipment I use.

I used to carry a beautiful pink leather camera bag but as my collection of lenses expanded I made the decision to upgrade to a more protective and durable bag.  I chose a Lowepro backpack for it’s size, the protective elements for my gear, and also comfort.

As I get ready to head outdoors for a my Spring sessions, here’s what I’m carrying:

Canon 5D Mark II

Canon 60d (back-up camera)

EF 24-70 f/2.8L (used  for family portraits in studio and outdoors)

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L (used for outdoor maternity & family sessions) + lens hood

EF 28mm f/2.8 (used for in home lifestyle sessions)

EF 85mm f/1.8 (used for newborn sessions and outdoor sessions)

EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro (used for newborn sessions)

Sigma Art 50mm f/1.4 (used for newborn & family sessions)

I also have a grey card and expodisc for setting my white balance, a cloth to clean my lenses, and 10 memory cards (Lexar and Sandisk).  Possibly the most important item in my bag isn’t gear related but I need to have it with me at all times.  Last August I discovered I have a life-threatening allergy to wasps so now my Allerject comes everywhere with me.

Another popular question is what my favourite lens is and to be honest that changes depending on the session I’m shooting but I also find I tend to go through phases where I use one lens more than my others.  My Sigma Art 50mm is on my camera most often these days followed by my 70-200 mm.

What’s your favourite piece of camera gear in your bag?
